We had a horrible situation with a company we hired to try & get us a modification. They did NOTHING & we’re having a hard time getting our money back. We’ve contacted the Attorney General.
Trouble is we still can’t get mortgage help. Is bankruptcy the only answer?

Don’t deal with these 3rd party guys. They are crawling out of the woodwork right now and taking a lot of peoples money and getting no results. Call your mortgage company directly. Tell them you want to see if you qualify for a loan modification. They should take some info from you over the phone and then mail you some paperwork. I do bankruptcy work for an attorney and several of our clients have been getting loan mods without our help. Just be sure to read all of the paperwork they may send to you. If you don’t understand it pay a lawyer the $100 or $200 to explain it to you…it may save you 10′s of thousands in the long run. Good luck.

No! Bankruptcy is not the only answer. You need to do your homework before consulting with a Loan Modification Company. Like with all disasters, there are those bad companies that try to take advantage of the situation. However, there are also those good companies…
Long story short, because the government has rescued so many of our banks, they are forcing them to assist homeowners to prevent foreclosure and delinquency.
If done correctly, a loan modification will be VERY effective. I know this from personal experience as I am an agent for a solid Loan Modification Company. Regardless of the company you choose, make sure they offer a forensic audit! This will ensure optimal savings and will prove highly successful. If you have any questions regarding the process of the loan modification or any further advice just email me.
You shouldn’t pay more than $3,000 USD! And seriously, make sure you do your homework when choosing the company you will be working with. Even attorneys charge steep prices and many don’t even offer the forensic audit.
You received good advise here, I will add a resource instead.
